MASTER THE ART OF SPORTS EVENT PHOTOGRAPHY

Sports event photography is a powerful medium of expression that provides emotion and action-packed pictures. However, good photos come and go in an instant with such fast-paced action, and subjects move quickly, making it difficult to keep up. This means that you need to be well prepared and always on toes to take that potential shot, that may as well prove out to be praise worthy.

Here's our complete guide to everything relevant to sports photography.

1. Know the game

Being a sports photographer, you get the chance to cover different sports, not necessarily the ones you know. In that case, learn about the basic rules. Doing so will help to predict players' next move resulting in planning better shots, especially in fast-paced games.

2. Know which lenses to use

You may need a different lens depending on your sports subject. A zoom or telephoto lens is suitable if you wish to shoot your subject from a distance.  A zoom lens is multi-dimensional. It can help you change the focal length when immediately need to shoot the subject moving further away.

If you wish to take up-close pictures, then a zoom lens or wide-angle will help you get that shot. Having different lenses will help you cover different angle shots.

Practice on timings as you need minimum lens changing time to stay on the action.

3. The intricate details

The best photos show determination on their faces, sweat, and mud on their clothes. These intricate details make the photographs worth the praise.

Arrive early at the sports venue to find yourself close to the action. Use a long lens to zoom in on your subject directly. Take some sample shots of people before the event begins, to help you get an idea of how your shots should perform.

4. Burst shots

The key to capturing a fast-pace game is taking burst shots. This way you will be able to capture the crucial moment with perfect timings.  The games often last very long, so it is wise to bring a tripod or monopod with you to save yourself from arm aches.

5. The crowd

The heart of any game is the cheering crowd. During the event, take a few moments and turn 180 degrees and take a few pictures of the supporters.

The raw emotions can be seen after a goal has been scored. It is the perfect time to capture -you will either capture the elation of the scoring team's supporters or the disappointment of the opposing team's fans. Whichever it is you will get the picture, full of emotions.

6. Back to the sun

In photography, light is everything. This means your actions will be illuminated by the sun. Make sure the sun is always behind your back to achieve proper exposure. If the sun is against you, your subject will appear shadowy and dark and may ruin the moment.

7. Leave late get there early

Sometimes you can get fantastic photos of sports events if no action is even on the pitch.
Arrive on the venue early to capture pre-game rituals like players warming up, officials doing the final check or the final pitch inspection by the groundkeeper.

Similarly, after the game, you will be able to capture winners ' happiness or the losers ' sorrow-discarded team flags or a single supporter in an empty stadium are ideal topics.

8. Pictures post-processing

Adjusting lights and a bit of cropping can do wonder to your pictures. After you select the pictures, see what touch-ups are needed and apply them to glorify the photos.

It's both exciting and challenging to photograph sports. It can be frustrating at times, but in the end, it's always worth it. Practice more and more. Your skills will improve as you gain more experience. Having fun and catching moments that matter to you is the most important thing.
