1.      Artificial Vagina

The artificial vagina has two collection methods. One is to have a fake vagina made of leather and rubber where the outer part is leather, and the inner part is rubber. That part is filled with warm water at the same temperature that a real cow would be between 38 C and 40 C. Once the vagina is ready, it approaches the bull that rides. A professional diverts the penis into the artificial vagina so that the animal ejaculates inside it.

The other way is to use a dummy inside which the artificial vagina goes. The device is made of a rigid metal housing, where a person sits inside it to hold the artificial vagina. The dummy is approached by the bull to mount it and once the penis is removed; the assistant simply directs the artificial vagina to the limb so that the male ejaculates. The ejaculate of the bull will have a higher sperm concentration with a low percentage of liquids from the accessory glands. It is an ideal sample to work in freezing the bull semen. 


2.      Electroejaculation


It is a part physiological procedure to collect semen. It consists of using electrical stimuli similar to those sent by the brain to the sexual, accessory glands and the penis, which results in an erection and ejaculation. The electroejaculation is used using a device. It is introduced rectally from the male and sends light and oscillating electric shocks to the reproductive system of the bull to obtain semen.

Semen collection should be done in a collection room. The collection can be made with artificial vagina (VA) or manually, either with a gloved hand (the so-called Japanese method) or by entering the penis in a disposable rubber cylinder (IMV, France). In the case of semen collection for field diagnosis, the most indicated (and probably the only form of a group) is to use a sow in heat, age and size fit body for the bull. The semen is collected in a plastic bag mounted in a thermos or a wide-mouth insulating container.
