1) Be flexible and open-minded
The ones who like to rule the world according to their preferences are less likely to enjoy such experiences. You have to be flexible in all the situations and be open-minded to the new recommendations and suggestions. The safari drives are pretty unique and unpredictable, so make sure you are not stressing about the things that are out of your control. You may not see much on your ride, but your friends may see a lot, every ride differs so be prepared about it. A few of the rides take longer whereas some rides are smaller. If you are not flexible and cannot adjust to the then-current circumstances, then I would advise you to not to take this trip.
Be willing to survive the extreme weathers, both warm and cold, the flies and mosquitoes will have the party on your body and most importantly be prepared for the bumpy rides. Most of the time, your driver will be driving on the sand and gravel roads, and in some cases, the driver may drive through the river, cross a bush or even cross a stone field. Be geared up for all kinds of drives.
2) Adhere to the instructions
When it is your first time, it is better to listen to your guide and do as they say. Stay in the car, no matter how much you want to explore the world from the outside. The animals there are wild and camouflaged, and most of the times you do not see them until it is too late.
Keep a safe distance from elephants, do not be loud and most importantly keep all your cameras and phones in the car. Make sure you are not standing between hippos and water, hippopotamus is a pretty aggressive animal, and they can hurt you if you trigger them. So better be safe than sorry.
3) Be curious
It is your time to learn about wildlife; all the knowledge we have today is mainly from the books or the internet. Now that you are out on the field, you must take advantage of this opportunity and ask your guide all the questions you have. The best trick is to prepare your questions beforehand and keep adding more in the list through the trip. Most of the safari guides are pretty informative, and they can tell a lot about wildlife animals and their behaviors. Share your knowledge with the other tourists and educate the guide about the matters he/ she is not aware of.
4) Take pictures
Well, it goes without saying but capture every moment, but do not forget to live that moment before you capture them. You will never have this experience again, so make sure you are not letting this opportunity go and are making the most of it. The first time you see an elephant, you may take 50+ pictures from every angle, the next time you will take 20 only, and by the time you are coming back, you will not take any. This is how it is, but you better take as many pictures as you can to secure each moment in them.
5) Look for the guided safaris
Some people prefer driving on their own; however, guided safaris are the better option. Many affordable African safari guides are available who will not leave you destitute, so it is best to seek their help. Moreover, you will not have to drive, they can offer better expertise and knowledge, and you can spend more time with your family.
Visiting the African safari is one of the lifetime experiences, so make sure you are going on every safari ride you can and make the best of this time.
