How do you think about life? Do you think there's just this world, and it ends when we die? Or do you believe in a here-after that goes on forever? In his video "The Eternal Life of God" H.Eric Fearman talks about the true meaning of eternal life. Many people do not know what the Bible really means when it talks about eternal life.
You might believe that it means "living forever". But that's not it. The soul doesn't cease to exist when we die. Everyone goes on to live forever, either in hell or heaven. "Then it must mean that living forever in heaven or hell is eternal life." But that's not it either.
John 3:36 says, "He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abideth on him."
For believers in Christ, eternal life definitely means living with God after our physical death, but the Bible has a lot more to say about the characteristics of eternal life.
God has Granted Eternal Life as a Gift to Believers of Jesus Christ
The apostle Paul states, "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." Romans 6:23. Hence, eternal life is not something we earn or deserve, but it's a gift from God's favor.
For Believers, Eternal Life is a Present-Tense Possession
Several Scriptures speak of everlasting life as something that we have here in this life instead of one that begins after we get to heaven. So the question still remains about what is everlasting life? John 3:16 says that Jesus Christ came to earth for only this reason.
"For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." There's a common misconception that we must avoid sin to avoid hell. But this is not what John 3:16 says. Jesus came so that we would not perish in hell, and He paid for all our debts, even those we haven't committed yet. Sin was an obstacle standing between man and God, and Jesus removed it forever. So what does that entitle us? It entitles us a life with God forever in heaven, but there are magnificent benefits right here on earth. Eternal life happens to be one of those benefits.
Eternal Life is Knowing God
You may not be satisfied with this definition since it may not live up to your expectations of eternal life, and you want there to be something more. The premise lies in understanding what the Bible means when it says "know." It talks of something much more significant than intellectual knowledge. When Jesus said that eternal life was knowing God, then that meant having a close, intimate, personal relationship with God.
Many people are waiting to die for that relationship to develop, but this is not what the lesson is here. Like H.Eric Fearman said, your eternal life begins here, now! You're missing out on the eternal life Lord wants to have with you this minute, in this life.
Eternal Life Defines the Quality and not Just the Duration of Life
True believers live their eternal life presently and not muddle through life by singing songs about going to heaven and what a day that will be! They are improving and enhancing the quality of life God has given them and doing deeds as directed by Bible verses and following the path led by Jesus.
Your eternal life begins as soon as you put your faith in Jesus and apply yourself in developing a profound relationship with God right here on this earth. Everlasting life is the quality of life that is brought about by knowing Christ and the Lord by experience. Start your eternal life right now so that you may continue it in heaven!
