Negligee necklaces were very popular during the Edwardian era. A variation on the Lavalier is the negligee necklace. The pendants can be a mixture of two separate gemstones, such as diamonds, rubies or sapphires, or sometimes pearls. During the Edwardian period, the negligee collar was common.

The word pendant is derived from the French word pendre, meaning "to hang." When an ornament hangs freely from a necklace, it becomes a pendant. To protect the wearer against damage, pendants were used as a talisman in ancient times. There is a variant of this necklace in most ancient and modern cultures. Holy symbols have also been used in pendants as a depiction of one’s devotion. It is possible to make pendant’s chain from any material, including chains, fabric, ropes, leather, and ribbons.
