Have you heard of mooring a boat? Mooring correctly in port
is a guarantee of safety both for our boat and for the port itself and for our
dock neighbors. Not occasionally, but the seafarers are forced to check
moorings when conditions get ugly. Let's save them work with by securing our
boats well and go home in peace. And, for this we need the best boat docking supplies.
Mooring the boat well and leaving it well protected with the
help of boat
fender accessories such as boat
fenders, boat dock fender holder does not
offer any complications. It is enough to know three basic knots and their
specific us. Boat
docking supplies must include the most
suitable ropes for it.
Let's check
out the boat docking supplies:
Ropes
Ropes are a salient feature in choosing boat docking supplies. Polyamide
or polyester three-strand ropes are generally used for lashings. They are the
ones that are most resistant to ultraviolet rays. It is necessary to have a
complete set on board and periodically check its status. Each rope, depending
on its use, receives a specific name:
·
Long: one for
bow and one for the stern. They prevent the boat from moving forward or
backwards when we are buckled. In point berths, they will be used aft, one on
each side to the dock cleats.
·
Springs: they must
be two, at least equal to or greater than the length of the boat. If they are
charged, they bring the bow or stern closer to the dock.
·
Beams: they keep
the boat attached to the dock when the wind blows from there. We can have two,
but generally, one is enough at mid-length. It does not have to be very long,
as it prevents the boat from separating from the dock.
·
Elbow
patches: they must be longer than the crossbars since they are tied
to exterior buoys and serve to prevent the boat from hitting the jetty when we
cross when the wind comes from outside. It is a rare situation in marinas, but
it never hurts to have at least one.
Let us, therefore, remember what moorings we must carry on
board: at least two lengths, two springs and a cross, which we will always keep
well adjoined in the cockpit trunks and ready to be used.
Boat fender accessories
Boat
fenders are the bumpers of our boat. Therefore, we must choose the
most appropriate boat fender accessories.
Generally, the cylindrical fenders are enough. But if we have space on board,
it never hurts to have a spherical or bumper. Place it where it is required in
case of emergency, and a half-moon to protect the bow of the dock tied on end.
There are also flat mat type to protect flat surfaces. The essential thing to
be effective is to place them at the proper height.
If we moor on a dock, the correct thing to do is to place it
just above the waterline so that the boat fender
coincides with the most salient part of the dock or jetty. If we join boat fenders with other boats, we must place at least one boat dock fender holder in the
beam of our boat and the neighbor's hull.
